Pumwani Maternity College of Nursing and Midwifery sits inside the grounds of Pumwani Maternity Hospital, off General Waruinge Road on the Majengo side of Eastleigh. It is one of the oldest midwifery schools in Kenya: training began in 1927 under the Lady Grigg Welfare League to supply midwives for the maternity hospital of the day, and the Nairobi municipality took the school over in 1944. Today it is a public college run by the Nairobi City County Government and registered with TVETA, and its graduates sit the Nursing Council of Kenya licensing examinations. The main course is the three-year diploma in Kenya Registered Nursing and Midwifery, offered since 2007. Registered nurses and midwives with practice experience can also join a two-year Higher National Diploma in Midwifery. Teaching is organised in general nursing, midwifery and community health departments, with clinical placements in the hospital next door. Students use a clinical skills laboratory and a library with internet-connected computers, and optional hostels are available for men and women. Intakes are in March and September.
