About

Kariobangi Women Promotion Training Institute (KWPTI) sits inside the compound of Holy Trinity Catholic Parish in Kariobangi North, on Kamunde Road just off Outer Ring Road. The Comboni Missionary Sisters set it up in 1992 to give young women from Kariobangi, Korogocho and nearby settlements, many of them young mothers, a trade they could live from, and the sisters still run it as a non-profit college. It began as a government-registered TIVET centre and is now registered with TVETA, so trainees sit KNEC or NITA examinations. Training centres on catering, dressmaking and tailoring, and hairdressing and beauty therapy, with shorter units such as embroidery, tie and dye, nail technology and waxing; the college also lists computer and soft-skills training. Fees are kept low with help from donors, and the institute offers free baby care for trainee mothers who have nobody at home to look after their children. It runs a small shop selling garments made by trainees and holds an annual sports day and graduation.
