The Mathare North centre of Missions of Hope International started in 2008 with 85 pupils and has grown into one of the charity's biggest schools, with about 1,000 learners and 57 staff. It runs from pre-primary to Grade 8 under the Competency Based Curriculum. Mathare North is home to an estimated 85,000 people, and the school was opened for children whose families could not otherwise afford school. The centre combines classroom teaching with a Christian ethos, community outreach and child sponsorship, and a church grew out of its work in the estate. Learners attend as day pupils.
