Moi Girls School Nairobi is a public girls' boarding secondary school in Kibra, set between Kibera Drive and Joseph Kang'ethe Road about seven kilometres west of the city centre. The Ministry of Education opened it in February 1964 as a girls' day school on the grounds of the former Woodley Primary School, with one class of 35 girls and two teachers, to serve families on low incomes. Hostels followed as most girls travelled from Eastlands; a 140-bed dormitory funded by USAID opened in 1968, and in 1970 the school took its first A level students. In 1974 the then Vice President Daniel arap Moi led a harambee for another hostel, and the school grew into a five-stream boarding school that now carries his name. Its former students include Martha Karua, a former Minister for Justice, and Prof. Olive Mugenda, a former Vice-Chancellor of Kenyatta University. Like other senior schools it is moving from 8-4-4 to the Competency Based Education senior school pathways.
